Editing the Preliminary Music video

After we had filmed the final cut of the music video, we then entered the MAC rooms and started to upload and capture the film onto the computer, we had to adjust the video because although we were singing we had to balance it so it looked like the music from the track of "Don't go breaking my heart" was matching the two singers Beth and Joe as they were singing out loud.

This is where we had to align all the voices so that they were in sync and it didn't look unprofessional because if they were not in sync then it would look like the people signing were out of tune. When we finally aligned everyones voice with the background music it looked like the people singing in the background on the youtube video was in fact Beth and Joe, this is effective because it means that we can lip sink to the song and still make it seem that we are the ones singing

We also added in fade ins and fade outs, this added effect to the music video because instead of just seeing both singers at the same time the whole time, we mixed it up a little, by adjusting the lines of the clips we could change the clip that was being showed on the real screen. first it would start of with Joe singing then it would change to Beth as soon as it was her time to sing. Then to change it just being one person singing, we included both people singing to give it more of an effect. We tried to get a split screen of both of them but it didn't turn out to well so we just scrapped the idea and was going to consider to using it in our main task.

Asking Permission

Looking on various websites there were different types of music that we could of chosen from, different genres, different ages and other different factors that occur in the music. On unsigned.com we found a song sung by the 99's called "oh me oh my". This band is a sort of Oasis type music and will really suit the style of our group.

This is the music video that they had created and put on youtube

As we thoroughly studied the song looking at wether it would work or not, we finally agreed to send them an email to see if we can actually use their video. we have yet to receive the reply to this email but as soon as we do we will place it on the blog.

Our finished Preliminary music video

For our preliminary task we had to create a minute as a minimum music video, we were given the music track by Elton John and Kiki Dee "Don't go breaking my heart", with the HD camera and tripod we set it up and took various cuts of the music video.

This was the music video that we created for our own preliminary task. We had created the video and lip sinked to the song created by Elton John and Kidi Dee called "Don't go breaking my heart"

My favourite music video

My favourite music video is Nickleback- Rockstar
When i was watching this music video i was thinking about some of the effects that is used and wether it would work in our own music video, some of the fade ins and fade outs looked very effective and would make the video look more interesting, they also have loads of different people singing the song to show mixed emotions of the different video. It also relates to the real world and what is happening to people as we speak. Also the song talks about the use of drugs n which people have addictions to them and it makes a story that everyone who listens to it will understand the story.

Prelimiary Task

In our prelimiary task we were set a task to create a short music video on the song "Dont go breaking my heart" by Elton John and Kiki Dee.
We were given a HD camera and the usual equipment such as the tripod and the tape to create our own prelimiary task. We went into a classroom and used our teachers computer, so we could get the music up on youtube. the video we found had music and lyrics, so it was easy for the two singers Beth and Joe, while myself and Tom filmed them.

We were advised by our teacher to keep the tape running and once the song had finished, to go back to the start and just start to sing the song again. This meant that there motivation with the song didnt stop and each take got better and better. We had taken 3 takes of the song and it was in fact the last one is what we used.

This video clip is of youtube and was the video that we used to complete our preliminary task, it includes the music and the music to guide us through the song. We placed the camera next to the overhead projector screen so it looks like Beth and Joe are looking at the camera at all times when they are in fact looking at the lyrics on the screen.

Unsigned.com

When we were searching for our music we had to take into account about the copyright laws so we couldn't not use any type of artists or groups that have already signed a record deal already. However if we knew the artist then we could contact them via email and ask permission, but none of our group members did not know any one famous in the music industry so that that didnt apply. So instead we had to look on this website and search for bands that we believe we could make a music video and what song we would enjoy singing to. So we decided to go for the band The 99's with their son "oh me oh my"

How the music video was invented

A Music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 80s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip".

During 1960's the music videos were known as promotion films, documentaries.

On Top of the pops when the band was not present and they were in line to perform they had dance groups to interoperate the music to their imagination. The group that stood in for them was called legs and co, these were a dance group that were put on stage if the band was not present.

But after queen made a "short film" also know as the music video. This then meant that the dance groups got the boot as more and more music videos were used if the groups due to be at Top of the pops were not present.

How the process works (Of the music video)

This is how a music vides is thought out, then planned and then the beggining of the music video is created

Step 1 - A commissioner from a record label sends a track to 5-10 directors
Step 2 - The directors then each submit a treatment
Step 3 - This stage is unpaid
Step 4 - The director who has submitted the "Best Treatment" is then commissioned to make a music video
Step 5 - Only then is the directors paid

Jamie Thraves

This was the case study that we had a look at

The Director was Jamie Thraves who was a British Writer and Director, he made short films at university to try and get used to the equipment during his time. he used his award winning short film as a "Calling Card" to get his "Foot In The Door" with the video production company factory films. He began his shooting with three very low budget music videos that cost about £5000 each. His biggest creation was the amazing cold play's music video called the Scientist that won three Moon Men awards at the 2003 VMA's.

One music video that Jamie Thraves helped make was the song "Just" by Radiohead, this was a very successful music video because everyone that watched it was baffled by what the man had actually said to make everyone else lay down by the side of him.

Another music video that Jamie Thraves helped make was the song "The scientist" by cold play, this was a very successful song because it showed a story of the mans past in the last 4 minutes or so, the video goes backwards from start to finish that makes it effective

How might we measure the success of a music promo video?

There are many ways in which we can measure the success of the music promo video
. Downloads
. Sale figures
. Word of mouth
. How remembered it is
. Media coverage
. Amount of views on YouTube
. How influentual the song is
. Newspaper articles/Tv reports
. Charts
. Amount of publicity
. How many times it has been shown on Television
. VMA awards
. Most viewing of music videos are now online

The purpose of the music video

The purpose of the music video is to promote the song to add more value to it, it also is made to raise awarness to the song as people may not have heard of it before and when they have viewed the video they like it in which they now like the song. Another reason in which they might create a music video is to create a story for the song which could create feelings and emotions.

Also when you create a music video, it is created for
. Advertisement
. Draws attention to the music/song
. Illustrates the song
. Appeals to a visula audience
. Expresses an individuals emotions
. Markets an image
. Promotes the artist/single/album
. Persuades you to download the song
. Persuades you to buy the CD or Album

. Product placement, E.G Christina Aguillera + Perfume (Not myself tonight)

Looking for the Music Video

The first lesson were we were disscussing the task in which we have to complete for the year 13 course was to find a piece of music to go with our own created music video. as you are not allowed to use other famous music from famous music videos we had to find unsigned and people that are not famous to find a right piece of music to settle our needs.

We were told a website called unsigned.com, this website is were people that are into music and want to become big, put there music on the site so other people sometimes music scouts look opn hoping to get a chance to become a "star".

Looking on this website there are many choices that we looked through with different types of beats and genres to suit peoples taste. we have not yet found a type of music that we are keen on but we are still looking for the right one.
