Coventions of a music video

The conventions of a music video vary depending on genre of music. However, some general conventions are: The artist is shown performing, the lyrics of the song influence what is shown in the video, the pace of editing fits the pace of the music, and the codes of dress reflect the mood of the song.

Our Focus Group

We gathered different people in a classroom to complete our focus group, we started by playing the music that we had chosen for our music video to see what they thought about of it.
We then had to ask them a few questions just to figure out so answers that we are willing to find out, the first question that we asked them was,

What are your first impressions of the song? We had many different answers by the people that we asked, some said that the song was alright and that it was very catchy and a type of upbeat song. This is what we thought when we picked the song which is helpful because its not just us that think it is a catchy song others do aswell.

The next question was

Which other artist or band did the song remind you off? We also had different answers from the people that we questioned, the answers were Oasis, the kooks, Sway and even Jellyfish. This meant that the band was not unique but aleast is got compared with some good bands which was impressive for us.

The final Question was

How does the song make you feel? there was different answers from this that was quite good. we heard that the song was excitable, happy tuned, weird and it even was named as relaxing tune which was ice to hear. this will help us when creating the video because we will need to make sure that these moods are put into the video.

Below is the whole interview with everybody and everyones answers filmed.

Musical youth-Pass the dutchie Voted 100

Musical youth's pass the dutchie was voted 100 in the top 100 pop music videos, Musical youth had bee the first black band that was ever shown on MTV, people still these days believe it was Micheal Jackson but Musical Youth got there first. it was originally "Pass the KUTCHIE" but it had to be changed because that word in fact meant a canabis pipe, so for the song to be able to go ahead then all the references to drugs because they were kids had to be removed otherwise it could be seen as controversial. It was a major hit, holding the number one position on the UK singles charts for three weeks in September and October 1982.

Talking Heads-Once in a lifetime Voted 87

Talking heads was voted number 87 in the top 100 music videos
I see this as the weirdest music video that i have ever seen, when we are making our music video we may use some wierd dances to add humour to it but nothing else. The music video is about when Byrne is shown making sudden flings of his arm, tapping his head, and getting on his hands and knees to pat the floor, much like simple tricks which can be done with actual marionettes. In the background, clones of Byrne dance in perfect synchronization; in the foreground, a larger Byrne is getting further and further out of synch.

Eminem-Stan voted number 31

Stan was voted number 31 in the top 100 pop music videos
The song tells the story of a fictional man named Stan who claims to be Eminem's biggest fan. Throughout the song, he becomes progressively more and more obsessed with Eminem, culminating in his suicide. The first three verses are delivered by Eminem as Stan while the fourth verse is Eminem attempting to write to Stan, only to realize that he had already heard about Stan's death on the news. The song has sold over 750,000 copies in the UK. It was also seen as controversial because of the amount of swearing that was used in the song, it got to the point that it could only be shown on a late night showing as it was that bad.

Coldplay-The scientist voted number 11

In the top 100 the scientist was voted number 11
Coldplay the scientist was a massive music video and had a massive impact, it was the first music video to go backwards. Even though the music video went backwards it was still making sense. This music video was directed by Jamie Thraves. It is built around a piano ballad, with its lyrics telling the story about a man's desire to love and an apology. It was part of the album rush of blood to the head that went to number 10 in the UK charts.

Michael jackson-Thriller Number 1

Michael Jackson was voted the best pop music video, this was voted number 1 because of the amount of different types of costumes that were used and the amazing song that went with it. Voted as the most influential pop music video of all time, Thriller proved to have a profound effect on popular culture, and was named "a watershed moment for the music industry" for its unprecedented merging of filmmaking and music. Michael Jackson's Thriller is a 14-minute music video for the song of the same name released on December 2, 1983 and directed by John Landis.

In the making

This was at the start of creating the preliminary music video, and making sure that Beth and Joe singing was in sync with the music in the background
At this point we were thinking what effects we were going to use and wether the video would flow.
This is when we were editing the music to the make sure that all the fade ins and fades outs to make the music video look interesting
