Evaluation Question 1-In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media

When we started to create the music video we had to plan as much of the music video as possible, this was because we had to know what we was doing throughout the music video so it looked professional and it showed that we had planned the music video in different steps that would come together and make the music video look like a complete puzzle. The first thing we thought about was the storyline of the video, we chose to use a boyfriend, girlfriend story type where Tom was having problems with the break-up. In the opening scene of the music video we filmed Tom waking up on the morning of the day after the break-up, this shows him in different places around his bedroom but as a still image, then the shot before he rips up the picture we use a shot that was use in the music video Naive by The Kooks, on the left hand side is Tom on the end of the bed and on the right hand side is a member of the Kooks at the end of the bed. This is exactly how we wanted it to be filmed because it shows the hurt and depression of the character that Tom is playing.
           Tom                                                 Member of the kooks
Another picture that we used from another famous artist was the close up on the guitar, this was used by Coldplay in viva la vida, we kept on watching that vital part in their music video and decided that we was going to use something similar to it so in our band we had charlie holding the guitar and there being a close up of the guitar to show the similarity. This shot was used in our music video throughout, during the band playing and the lead singer doing a solo to show the consistency of different shots,

As you can see in the images, the top one is a member of Coldplay holding the guitar, and there is a close up of the guitar. This is very similar to our close up on the guitar as we thought that using that went well with the current piece of music that was playing at that specific time.

During our media video there is different types of shots where Tom is in front of a famour landmark and holding up a piece of cardboard with lyrics on, this idea was first spotted when we was in class watching the top 100 music videos nominated by channel 4. It was voted quite highly and we had the idea after viewing the video. this is to show the audience the lyics during the song and the effects of using the carboard to somehow show the emotion of the person.

This is from Bob Dlyan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, it is in black and white showing the lyrics of the song on a piece of white paper. Next to it is Tom in front of Tower Bridge Holding a piece of card with that part of the songs lyrics on.

Another big part that takes place in our music video is the OH ME OH MY take where we have four different panels, and four different pieces of paper with the lyrics of the main chorus on. These four pieces have "oh" "me" "oh""my" and the first attempt we get them mixed up so we can perform the passing through the screen technique. As you can see the panel is split up into four different parts of the screen, with four different colours. We didn't use that specific effect of the different background colours but we made sure that the card that was being shown in the different shot was a different colour.

As you can see in the picture above our music video is at the bottom and Mc Fly's song Five Colours In Her hair, we see this video while searching through youtube looking for different ideas and techniques that we could sort of re create, so we thought to pass the words through the screen.

Our music video challenges forms and conventions of real media products because in our video the female has the dominant part of the relationship whereas in real media products the male normally dominates the relationship. We have done this because it is a type of way which it challenges real media products.
An example of the is by Eamon-I don't want you back, this video shows the male dominance as he is breaking up with his girlfriend and claiming he don't want her back.

Evaluation 3- What have you learned from your Audience Feedback?

The first question that we asked was

What gender are you?

As you can see from the screenshot above, the survey was dominated by male answers , in total there was 9 males that answered the survey, there was a total of 6 female's that answered the survey, and two people where not sure of the gender.

The second question was

How old are you?

On this specific question we tried to find out the average age of people that filled in our survey and watched our music video, As you can see by the screenshot above 2 people between the ages of 9-15 answered our survey, 12 people between the ages of 16-21 answered our survey 3 people between the ages of 22-30 answered our survey but no-one from the ages of 30+ answered our survey. This showed us that people of our generation was the most popular type of people to answer the survey and watch our music video.

The third question was

Having watched our music video what would you give it out of 10? (10 being the best)

The fourth question is

What genre do you consider our music video?

As you can see by the Wordle that i created, comedy was the genre that people believed to vote for the most, 2nd was voted to a story type genre, romance was in 3rd, cartoon and emotional was joined in 4th and with no votes was the genre dance.

The fifth question was

How would you rate the lip syncing?

As you can see on our survey, the question of how would you rate our lip syncing ability. The best answer was very good which 7 people voted for, in second place was good, this got 9 votes, then average lip syncing was voted by 1 person and poor and very poor got no votes which was very good on our behalf.

The sixth question is

How would you rate our acting

The seventh question is

What elements of the music video would you say needs improving?

As you can see the Wordle that i created above shows that the main thing that everyone believes that needs to be changed is the Mise en scene and more planning needs to be made, also up there is the lip syncing should improved.

The eighth question is

Do you think the locations are appropriate?

Through this survey we asked the question, do you think that the locations suit the music video. The most answered was Yes to say that the locations did suit the music video, one person said that the locations did not suit the music video, and three people thought that the locations suited the music video sometimes.

Magazine advert research-Famous Artist

When I was creating this magazine advert we had to look at other bands that we where believed was the same type of music that we had created in our music video. We then had to look at the way that the magazine advert was created, what fonts were used and why, what colours were used and why. We also had to think about what type of information would be used and put on the magazine advert to make it look more presentable and more understandable.
Some information such as websites that the song is available on, what ratings the music video has been given from other types of magazines and websites to show the audience whether the magazine is good enough to even have a look at it. Also on the magazine you need to make sure that colours that are being used go well together and don't hurt the human eye, Colours like a orange font on a blue background doesn't go and would look unpresentable.  Chase and status has made sure that the have kept the same type of font throughout the making of their own magazine advert, they have also put the colour of the font is only white and yellow, this is also the colour of the writing on the CD colour.

Suture

Hollywood narrative, Editing, Sound and Mise en Scene is a suture that makes people believe or puts the audience in a way that there is only one explanation. However that is not the case and therefore the audience goes along with their beliefs.

The Uses and Gratifications Model

-It is still unclear that there is any link between the consumption of violent media texts and violent imitative behaviour.
-It is also clear the theory is flawed in that many people do watch violent texts and appear not to be influenced.
-Therefore a new theory is necessary, this is called the uses and gratifications model.
-The uses and gratifications model is the opposite of the effects model.
-The audience is active.
-The audience uses the text and is not used by it.
-The audience uses the texts for its own gratification or pleasure.
-Here, power lies with the audiences with media texts and how and why they use them.
-Far from being duped by the media, the audience is free to reject, use or play with media meanings as they see fit.
-Audiences therefore use media texts to gratify needs for diversion/escapism/information/pleasure
-Comparing relationships and lifestyles with one's own.
-Sexual stimulation
-The audience is in control and consumption of the media helps the people with issues such as :
learning/emotional satisfaction/relaxation /helps with issues of personal identity/help with issues of social identity/help with issues of aggression and violence.

Audience Theories- Institution

The consumption of media texts has a consequence.
The hypodermic model
Here, the messages in media texts are injected into the audience by the powerful, syringe - like media
The audience is powerless to resist.

Key evidence for the effects model.
1. The Frankfurt school theorised in the 1920's and 30's that the mass media acted to restrict and control audiences to the benefit of corporate capitalism and governments.
2. The Bob doll experiment.
-This is a very controversial piece of research that apparently proved  that children copied adult behaviour.
-This was conducted in 1961 by Albert Bandera.
-In the experiment children watched a video where an adult violently attacked a clown toy called a Bobo doll.
-The children were then taken to a room with attractive toys that they were not permitted to touch.
-The children were then led to another room with Bobo dolls.
-88% of the children then  imitated the violent behaviour that they had earlier viewed. 8 months later ----40% of the children still imitated the violent media content.
-The conclusion reached that children will imitate the violent media content.
-The film 'Child's Play' in the murder of James Bulger in 1993.
-The game Manhunt in the murder of Stefan Pakeerah in 2004 by his friend Warren LeBlanc.
-The film A clockwork orange (1971) in a number of rapes and violent attacks.
-The film Severance (2006) in the murder of Simon Everitt.
-In each case there was a media and political outery for the tasks to be banned.
-In some cases laws were changed , films banned, and newspapers demanded the burning of films.
-Subsequently, in each case it was that no case could be proven that the media caused any crime.
-The effects model contribute to moral panics whereby the media produce inactivity, which either makes us students which want to pass their exams or couch potatoes who make no effort to get a job.
-The media produces violent copycat behaviour or mindless shopping in response to advertisements.

Making the Magazine advert

We collected the pictures that were used for our digipak and opened up the picture on photoshop so we could edit it. We used the magnetic Lasso tool to cut around the picture to make sure that there was no brick wall behind them and it looked more professional.

This is where we had to try different filters and effects in the filter gallery, we searched for different types of darkening tools, different contrasts and different mixes of colours to see what truly looked effective and available for our magazine advert.

This is what photoshop looked like once we had cut out the picture, we then change the colour of the picture to make it suit the magazine advert.

The last few edits of the film

Today we was just looking through the music video to see what last tweaks that we could add in to finally finish of the music video. The deadline is soon and we have got all the filming done and mainly all the editing aswell, just the final bit were the Oh me Oh my is written on the book,

Miss Thompson gave us a list of what we needed to add into the music video to finish it off,

  1. The 2nd oh me oh my was not in time not in time so we had to change it so it was in sync
  2. Close up on guitar was not long enough
  3. Make a title and artist at the beginning of the video
  4. Between london cards we needed to reorder and sort out the speed as it looked unprofessional
  5. Band wipes in-between the second verse, not fades as there are a few of them already
  6. Transitions
  7. Edit the exercise book part so the Oh Me Oh My looks like it jumps onto the front of the page

Monday, 23 January 2012

New Idea

Looking through our music video we decided that we hadn't got enough footage for the OH ME OH MY chorus at the end, so we decided to add something different in this was to write down Oh Me Oh My on a white pad with different coloured pens on the side of the book to make it look creative.

After every one word we would record the word on the pad and then stop recording so it doesn't actually show the person writing the word, it just jumps to the next word which makes it stick out and looks creative.

The colour of the words also were different and we tried to make it look good by not being organised when writing the words so the words were not placed in a correct position they was separated apart from the other words.

The schedule for the filming

This picture is off the schedule that we created to show what we were doing, over the dates that we have wrote about, the props that we had used on them specific days, who was currently at the place when we were filming, and where about we were filming.

It also shows the costumes that everyone that was being filmed would be wearing and what they would be wearing in specific destinations.

Pictures for Digipak

These are the pictures that are used in our music video, magazine advert and the digipak. This is the main feature in our music video because it is when they get the boards mixed up and have to quickly change it so it is correct

The OH ME OH MY take

This is what we had in mind and when we were filming it, it was perfect the way it come out. What we had to do was we needed to have the words for OH ME OH MY round the wrong way then we had to change them through the different windows and this is what it looked like while it was being filmed.
As you can see Charlie and Tom have got the cards the wrong way round and then they have to pass them through the different window, this is tricky to time but it looks good. Other than that Jake and the other Jake are looking up and shaking there heads.

Editing the film

Adjusting lines to make other layers drop in and out so it looks creative and other frames look better when they are mixed together.

This is all the different frames that we have included in our music video some are parts of others that have been cut out and maybe used in another place

The two blue flags are were we are taking the footage out of the whole clip as that is the only part we are using

This is were we speed things up to make it look comical and intresting for others to view

Anaylsis of the survey

After we made our survey, we were waiting on responses to see different peoples views of what they think about a music video, to be honest despite getting about 50 responses for our thriller last year this year we only managed to get 15.

The first question

What gender are you?

How old are you?
Mostly people took our survey from the ages of 16 to 19, this shows that in that age region is the target audience for our music video.

What is you favourite music video and why?

All the answers within this table is what people voted as their favourite music video they have seen, all of these answers aree good to have as it can guide us into a directrion where we think peole are going to like our music video and our song. After doing a couple of lessons on the top 100 pop music videos we have a better understanding of music videos and we will try to include certain factors that our audience like.
How often do you watch music videos in a week?

This pie chart shows how often people tend to watch music videos on TV or the internet, this main sided coloured blue is for 0-5 so we dont really know wether that is to say they dont watch them or they watch them 1-5 for instance, some other responses do say that they watch them quite a bit so we will want to make our video like one of them.

Would you go out of your way to watch a music video?
This is just a simple question to see if people would actually go out of their way to view a music video that they have heard the song to, out of the 15 responses 13 of them said they would which means a music video if vital and we are going to make our intresting so that people want to watch it aswell.

On a scale of 1-10 what is the importance of a music videon, in relation to the promotion of the song?
As you can see through the responses, from 6-10 people believed that it was a high importence that the music video does help promote the song.

What is you favourite music genre?
In this question we wanted to see what genre was the most liked by our target audience, as you can see dance is the most dominated by the people, with pop, RnB and dubstep just behind.

What is you favourite music video style?
In this question we was trying to find out what type of music video style people tend to enjoy watching, looking at our results people tend to choose comical more than others, with Dance, Story like and emotional being others favourites

What do you think a music video needs to be in a music video?
